JACK AND THE BEANSTALK
SCENE 1:
Outdoors. Jack’s house. Daytime.
The sound of joyful music can be heard as the curtain rises. This music will be the same as the one heard when Jack sings “I Want to Be a Magician” at the end of the scene.
On one side of the stage a poor-looking, crooked little house can be seen. A patchwork sheet is hanging out to dry on a clothesline near the house. On the other side of the house there is a little yard with a cow named Daisy in it. Behind the patchwork sheet there is a tree with a single red apple.
Jack jumps onto the stage using the patchwork sheet as if it were a theatre curtain.
JACK: Ladies and Gentlemen, my name is… Jack [Jack greets the audience with his cap], Jack the magician. No, no, no… Ladies and Gentlemen, my name is… Jack the magician. Oh… yes! My name is Jack: the best magician in the world! [He jumps up, grabs the patchwork sheet from the line and puts it on as if it was a magician’s cloak. Jack tries to do a magic trick for the audience, but he fails as he realizes he has forgotten the magic words. Jack approaches the audience and asks] Do you know the magic words? [Jack remembers] They start “Abra…” That’s it! ABRACADABRA! [To the audience] Thank you! [Jack does the magic trick as the audience help him by saying the magic words and then the trick is a success] Mum, mum! Come here, hurry up! [He shouts out feeling excited] Mum! I did it! I did the trick! Mum!!
[Jack’s mother enters sweeping the stage]
MOTHER: What’s the matter Jack?
JACK: Mum, I did the trick. Look! [He repeats the trick with the help of the audience]
MOTHER: Very good, Jack! [She kisses Jack, takes his cloak off and gives him the broom] But now you must work.
[Jack’s mother exits and the music of the song “I Want to Be a Magician” starts playing. Jack sings the song as he performs acrobatics with the broom. When the song stops, Jack’s

MOTHER: Jack! Jack!!
[When Jack hears his mother approaching, he hides. Jack’s mother looks for him on the stage but she can’t find him, because Jack is hiding behind her. Eventually, she realizes and laughs at how naughty Jack is.]
MOTHER: Hey! Jack! You’re always playing about! [She goes over to the tree, picks the last apple and she shows it to Jack] Look Jack! It’s the last apple! There is no food left.
JACK: But, Mum, I’m hungry!
MOTHER: [She gives Jack a sign saying: FOR SALE] I’m sorry, Jack. We must sell Daisy. [She gives Jack the apple and exits. Jack puts the sign next to the cow feeling terribly unhappy.]
SCENE 2:
Outdoors. Jack’s house. The “FOR SALE” sign can be seen.
Jack is very sad and Daisy tries to cheer him up. The sound of music can be heard and they both start dancing cheerfully.
JACK: [Holding Daisy in his arms] I’m very sorry, Daisy. I’ll miss you a lot, my friend.
Jack holds the apple that his mother gave him and gives half of it to Daisy. He closes his eyes waiting for a miracle to happen as he says the magic words ABRACADABRA. At that moment an old man looking like a magician enters juggling with five colourful fluorescent beans.
Jack approaches the magician open-mouthed.
JACK: Wow!!! What’s that?
OLD MAN: Magic beans!
JACK: [Looking at the man extremely surprised] Magic beans!
|
The song “What Colour is This Magic Bean?” starts. The old man sings as he shows the beans of different colours. Jack and the audience will sing, saying the colours of the beans out loud. The old man will play with the beans, putting them in his mouth, hands… and juggling them.

JACK: Incredible! [Looking at the beans.]
OLD MAN: Give me the cow and I’ll give you the magic beans.
JACK: [He can’t stop looking at the beans] O.K.!
OLD MAN: Just one thing, Jack. Use the beans to do good actions.
Jack nods. The old man gives him the beans. Jack puts them in his cap so as not to lose them, then he realizes that he will never see Daisy again. He looks at her unhappily and takes her in his arms.
JACK: Goodbye, Daisy!
The old man and the cow exit. Jack looks at them as they leave, feeling terribly unhappy. He takes the beans out of his cap and smiles. He sings one or two lines of the song “What Colour is This Magic Bean?” playing with the beans.
JACK: Mum! Mum! [She enters] Guess how much I got for Daisy!
MOTHER: Five? Ten? [Jack smiles proudly and nods his head] Fifteen? [His mother feels happier and happier] Oh! My God! Tweeeeeeeeeeeeenty! [Jack shows her the beans.] What? What’s this? [Jack sees his mother is getting angry, so he doesn’t say anything. His mother approaches the audience and asks:] What’s this? What? Magic beans? Oh! Jack! Go to bed at once.
JACK: But Mum! They’re magic!
MOTHER: Go to bed!
[Jack goes to bed and his mother exits, whispering angrily.]
SCENE 3:
Jack’s bedroom. At night.
Jack’s bedroom. Dim lights. The moon can be seen through the bedroom window. As it gets dark, the sound of slow music can be heard, just like a lullaby. Jack gets into bed feeling sad. He looks at the magic beans and suddenly has an idea. He gets up and approaches the audience.
JACK: Can you help me with the magic beans?
Jack closes his eyes and throws a bean backwards over his shoulder as the audience help him by saying ABRACADABRA. He opens his eyes but nothing happens. He goes back to bed feeling disappointed.
JACK: [To the audience] Good night!
The lights go down, the sound of magic bells start to be heard in crescendo, magic lights can be seen behind the window, the lights on the stage go up little by little as day breaks. A morning cock can be heard crowing and Jack wakes up. He gets up and leaves his bedroom. He sees how the magic bean has sprung up into a giant beanstalk. At first Jack is scared.
JACK: [He looks at the beanstalk feeling very surprised] Wow! Magic! Magic beans! [He shouts] Mum! Mum!
SCENE 4:
Climbing up the beanstalk.
Jack starts to climb up the beanstalk. He gets tired, falls asleep and the lights go down. When Jack wakes up, he comes down from the beanstalk on seeing a giant door with a giant door handle in front of him. Jack tries to reach the door handle but he can’t. He jumps up, but he can’t reach it. Finally, it occurs to him to use a branch of the beanstalk to reach the door. He succeeds in doing so.
Inside, the voice of an old woman can be heard.
WITCH: Who’s knocking on my door? [Angry]
JACK: It’s me. My name is Jack.
WITCH: [Opening the door] Get out of here! Go away immediately!
JACK: Please, madam, I’m very hungry!
WITCH: [The witch asks him to be quiet, putting her finger up to her mouth] Can’t you hear me? I said get out of here!
JACK: Please, plea…
The witch covers his mouth with her hand to stop him from shouting and whispers something in his ear.
JACK: [He shouts feeling really scared] A giant!
The witch, still covering his mouth, makes him enter the castle.
SCENE 5:
Inside the castle.
There is a giant clock. A table can be seen. At the back, the door of the castle can be seen through which Jack and the witch enter.
WITCH: Are you silly? Don’t shout! O.K. I will give you some bread. But go away quickly. The giant eats children.
Jack enters with the old woman and she gives him some bread. The old woman grabs him by his shirt to throw him out of the castle. Just then giant footsteps can be heard getting louder and louder.
WITCH: Come on! Quick! Hide behind the clock and be quiet.
The giant enters and sits at the table.
GIANT: Old woman! [He shouts and knocks on the table as he sees the food is not ready.] Bring me my food!
The witch realizes Jack can be seen by the giant behind the clock, so before the giant realizes, she reacts and goes over to where he is, trying to cover Jack with her body.
WITCH: OK! But first wash your hands!
The giant stands up and the witch tries to hide Jack under the table very quickly. The giant enters and starts to smell and search the whole place.
Suspense will increase as the giant gets near Jack and when he is just about to find him, the witch will realize and will intercede quickly.
|
|
WITCH: Oh!!!!!!!!!!!!! Silly giant! What you smell is not a boy, it’s the chicken I’ve cooked for you.
The witch serves him a giant dish with a giant chicken. She exits.
The giant eats the chicken.
GIANT: Old woman! And my milk? There is never any milk in this house and I love milk!!!!! Old woman! [Shouting] Where is my gold?
When the giant sees the old woman doesn’t answer him, he stands up to look for his bag of gold. Then Jack pokes his hand out from under the table and takes the chicken to eat it up. The giant enters. He is surprised to see the chicken is not there, he scratches his head and pays no special attention to it. Then he opens the bag of gold coins and starts counting them.
The giant can only count up to three, so after counting up to three several times, he asks the audience what number comes after three. He counts the coins with the help of the audience. Whenever the giant’s attention is distracted, Jack takes the coins away from the giant. Eventually the giant gets tired of counting and feels very nervous.
GIANT: Old woman! Where is my hen that lays the golden eggs?
Since the old woman doesn’t answer, the giant goes to get the hen. The hen is inside a cage. Jack tries to run away, but the giant enters and Jack hides under the table again. The giant puts the hen on the table.
GIANT: Lay a golden egg!
[The hen lays the egg and the giant picks it up happily.] Old woman! Where is my harp? [The old woman doesn’t answer, or perhaps she may answer from inside. The giant stands up and goes to get his harp. Jack will try to escape again. But he fails to do so and the giant comes back.] Harp! Play happy song for me to dance to. [The harp sings a rock-and-roll song and the giant dances cheerfully. Jack also dances under the table, and so does the hen at the end of the song]. Oh! I’m so tired! Harp, play me a soft melody. [The harp sings a lullaby and both the giant and the harp fall asleep]
HEN: [In a soft voice] Hey! You! You under the table!
JACK: Are you talking to me?
HEN: Yes, take me out of this cage. [Jack tries to do so, but he can’t open the cage because it’s locked. Then he remembers about the magic beans, puts the cage aside and says the magic words. The cage door opens.] Hurry up! Let’s get out of here. [When they are just about to leave, the witch blocks the door]
WITCH: You can’t get out of here. You need the key!
JACK: OK. Then bring the key.
WITCH: It’s not that easy! He’s got it. [Pointing at the sleeping giant]
JACK: [Jack sees the key is hanging out of the giant’s trousers.] It’s O.K.
[Jack approaches the giant on tiptoe to take the key. Here there is the typical situation in which someone who is asleep and snoring almost awakes up when someone tries to take the key away, but eventually Jacks succeeds in doing so.] Great! Let’s go. [They take the key, open the door, but when they are just about to leave…]
HARP: [The harp wakes up] Master!
Jack runs over to the harp and holds it up covering its mouth. It seems the giant is about to wake up, but he only changes his position and continues sleeping. They try to get away again, but when they are by the door, the harp bites Jack’s hand.
JACK: Ouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch!
HARP: Master! Master!
The giant wakes up.
GIANT: Now I’m going to eat you! [There is a chase and finally the giant traps Jack on the table holding him by his shirt. Jack shows him a magic bean and the giant stares at it in astonishment]
GIANT: What’s this?
JACK: A magic bean.
GIANT: [Enthusiastically, like a little boy] Magic?
JACK: [Seeing the giant is interested in magic] Yes, magic. And I am a magician, I am Jack, the best magician in the world. [Jack does a pair of magic tricks and the giant has lots of fun]
GIANT: Bravo! Bravissimo! Bravo! Great! Terrific! Hurray! [He applauds]
JACK: [Greeting] Thank you! Thank you!
GIANT: Very good. But now I’m going to eat you!
JACK: Wait a minute. I know you like milk very much.
GIANT: Yes, I love milk.
JACK: If you let me go, I will give you all the milk you want.
GIANT: Really?
JACK: I give you my word as a magician.
GIANT: It’s a deal!
[Jack takes the tablecloth and puts it on as if it were a cloak. He picks up a magic bean and says the magic words. He makes a bowl of milk appear.]
JACK: [Offering the giant the bowl] Take it. Drink. [The giant drinks and drinks and the bowl fills up again and again.]
GIANT: It’s incredible. It’s great! I will never be hungry again. Thank you for everything Jack. I give you my hen that lays the golden eggs.
JACK: Wow! Really? Thank you.
WITCH: Yes! Thank you very much Jack. Now we will be happy again in the castle!
Jack and the giant start to sing “Small and Big”.
|
|
JACK: Thank you. Now I must go. My mother may be worried. Goodbye, my friends.
Jack leaves and the witch and the giant say goodbye.
SCENE 6:
Outdoors. At Jack’s house. Daytime.
Jack enters, running, holding the hen in his arms.
JACK: Mum! Mum! [Jack’s mother enters and runs to hold Jack in her arms.] Look Mum! A hen that lays golden eggs. We will never be hungry again.
The hen lays an egg and Jack’s mother kisses Jack happily.
MOTHER: It’s incredible! [She takes the egg] I’m going to the village to buy some food. Hey! And be a good boy, Jack!
JACK: [He looks at the yard where Daisy used to be and gets very sad. He speaks to the audience] You know something? I miss Daisy. [Jack remembers when they played together.Suddenly two beans fall out of his hand. He looks at the beans and an idea occurs to him] Wait a minute! I still have two magic beans! It may work!
Jack says the magic words and the old man enters with Daisy.
OLD MAN: Jack, here you have Daisy. She was very unhappy without you.
The old man leaves.
JACK: Great! It worked! [Jack holds the cow in his arms] But I still have the last bean left. [To the audience] Come on children! Let’s ask for a wish! What do you think? No child in the world will be hungry ever again ! [Jack and the audience shout the magic words and the bean disappears]
Jack’s mother enters carrying a basket full of food.
MOTHER: Look Jack. I bought all this food!
Jack, his mother and Daisy sing the final song: “You make me happy?”
